It's another year of building on Yosemite's foundation, another year of incremental change, and another year of over-saturated mountain wallpapers. The name comes from a mountain range that encompasses Yosemite and El Capitan rather than moving away from them.
It's tempting to read the "macOS" rebranding as some grand statement about the Mac, but, truth be told, "Sierra" is more indicative of what we're getting. Often, those names are used to set expectations about the release. The Mac has long since ceased to be Apple's most important product, but the company has kept up the tradition of slapping a secondary name on each OS release, something separate from the version number and the "OS X" or "Mac OS X" branding. Safari changes how legacy plug-ins behave.The Photos app adds improved face recognition and adds Memories which groups similar pictures using faces, locations and object recognition.macOS Sierra 10.12.4 adds Night Shift which reduces blue light at night to help with sleep.It allows videos to be played in a floating window. Applications that support multiple windows can now have multiple tabs similar to Safari.It allows the user to share the clipboard for cut, copy and paste between macOS and iOS devices, including text and rich content, such as pictures or videos. It requires a Mac released in 2013 and later. It allows the user to unlock their Mac by holding a paired Apple Watch close to the Mac. It provides suggestions for freeing up disk space and gives the user detailed information about space usage per application. Optimized Storage was added to System Information.
